A Rebelião do Outono em Retrospectiva: 1
Nesta primeira de várias retrospectivas nós começaremos a olhar para trás e refletir sobre a Rebelião de Outubro. Nós vamos trazer histórias exclusivas que só poderiam ser articuladas depois que o calor da ação tivesse esfriado um pouco.
Sem dúvida, está rebelião demonstrou que a XR está crescendo mundo afora - em termos de números de rebeldes, intensidade, criatividade, visibilidade, e mais… Nós vimos um pulo no perfil daqueles que declararam suporte ao movimento, com realeza, atores, jornalistas e políticos usando suas plataformas para suportar a XR, e alguns até sendo presos.
Rebeldes em vários países desenvolveram as suas habilidades de desobediência civil, seus “super poderes”, empregando novas táticas criativas. Nesta edição, veremos como a solidariedade multinacional entre rebeldes tem sido usada para a vantagem dos protestos na Europa Central (Eslováquia, República Checa).
Ao mesmo tempo, nós vimos a polícia aumentar a sua resposta á XR, às vezes de modos chocantes e brutais. Mais do que durante a Rebelião em abril, é como se a força bruta tem sido mobilizada em serviço à negação da destruição do clima e da ecologia. No entanto, os rebeldes não parecem abalados, mesmo nos casos onde o público ainda está, pela a maioria, ignorante sobre a emergência (por exemplo: República Checa, Itália).
O processo crucial de punir aqueles que estavam envolvidos na Rebelião já começou - e nós não estamos falando só dos rebeldes detidos: como vamos detalhar abaixo, investigações já começaram em relação ao excesso usado pela polícia na Bélgica e no Reino Unido. Isto também é a hora para pedir desculpa onde elas parecem necessárias, como por exemplo as cartas escritas pela XR Bélgica aos membros do público e aos Rebeldes da XR que foram brutalizados pela polícia.
Este boletim de retrospectiva vai incluir notícias mais longas que permitem rebeldes a compartilhar suas experiências da Rebelião mais intimamente. Nós estamos abismados com a humanidade crua do rebelde que fez uma “Greve de Fome” na Itália; a dor da rebelde de 14 anos de idade da Eslováquia, que foi descolada brutalmente pela polícia. As fotos que costumam nos tocar frequentemente demonstram um spectrum de emoções — desde brincadeira, até a raiva, confusão, determinação: a lembrança da nossa complexa mas inescapável humanidade comum.
Conforme estas reflexões começam a pintar uma imagem mais completa da tempestade que foi a Rebelião, parece claro que: perdemos a nossa inocência e crescemos em números, determinação, habilidade e solidariedade.
Independente do que acontecerá no futuro, isto pelo menos é claro: nós agora somos uma comunidade de proporções verdadeiramente internacionais, e não pararemos até vermos a mudança que precisamos.

Está Cidade Nunca Dorme…
OUT 20 - 25 | Londres, Reino Unido
Outubro foi intenso para rebeldes do Reino Unido. Para muitos que se esforçaram e esticaram suas forças ao limite, a hora chegou para o descanso bem merecido.
Mas alguns continuam, com protestos poderosos e innovadores.
No domingo, dia 20 de Outubro, um grupo pequeno de rebeldes tiraram as roupas no chão da Galeria Nacional de Retratos enquanto outros derramaram óleo falso sobre os seus corpos nus. A galeria abriga a exibição chamada Prêmio de Retrato da BP (BP Portrait Award), uma exposição paga pela companhia de óleo e gás ‘Além do Petróleo’ (‘Beyond Petroleum’). A ação ilustrou a destruição trágica da vida causada pelas perfurações da terra, as brocas e os derrames de óleo e gás por companhias como a BP.
No dia a seguir, famílias da XR e educadores pediram ao Departamento de Educação para “dizer a verdade” e trazer a emergência climática para dentro do currículo escolar.
“Destruição climática e ecológica vai definir a vida de cada criança viva hoje,” foram as palavras de um rebelde, “mas é difícil deles levarem o assunto à sério, quando forma quase parte nenhuma do conteúdo das suas educações.
Pequenos rebeldes trouxeram o primeiro “love-in” ao Museu Marítimo. Unidos em canção, eles se apresentaram em solidariedade com as famílias a volta do mundo já afetadas pelas mudanças climáticas, especialmente no “Sul Global”. Também visitaram a nova casa do nosso barco Polly Higgins e honraram a luta da Polly, de tornar o ecocídio um crime.

Mais aconteceu em Outubro do que fomos capaz de reportar. Então esta semana, nós vos trazemos sumários e reflexões sobre a atividade rebelde de vários cantos do globo. A Rebelião Checa: Abalados, Machucados, mas Nunca Knockouteados
OUT 7-12 | Praga, República Checa
Novos recrutas potenciais no evento para mães e pais, ‘Esperanças Frágeis’, da XR Praga.
Sábado dia 12 de Outubro foi o último dia da rebelião que durou uma semana para rebeldes na República Checa. As ações mais audaciosas foram feitas neste último dia.
Rebeldes dominaram Wenceslas Square, um dos largos mais povoados de Praga, para comemorar um ‘Sábado de Festival’ repleto de música ao vivo, teatro e workshops sobre a crise ecológica e climática. Enquanto isso acontecia, em uma estrada adjacente, cerca de 200 rebeldes formaram um bloqueio de estrada para impedir o trânsito da tarde na capital. Pelo menos 8 rebeldes usaram cola para se apegar à estrada.
A polícia conseguiu liberar o bloqueio em menos de 15 minutos, mas fizeram isso com brutalidade. O resultado foi uma mulher sendo queimada com água quente (que a polícia acreditava que ia dissolver a cola), outra mulher sofrendo machucados significantes enquanto ela foi levada pela polícia, e uma menina de 14 anos de idade tendo sua pele rasgada da sua mão. Ela estava colada a outro rebelde e a polícia, que aparentava estar despreparada e ignorante sobre esta prática de desobediência civil, simplesmente as separou e as rasgou.

Enquanto ela chorava, um médico rebelde tentou á ajudar mas a polícia já tinha formado um cordão à volta da rua e não deixava ninguém passar. “Nós temos nossos próprios médicos”, foi a resposta da polícia.
Os “médicos da polícia” eventualmente chegaram e ficaram seriamente alarmados, incorretamente acreditando que a mão da menina estava dissolvendo por causa de químicos na cola. Ela foi levada ao hospital em uma ambulance com a sua mãe ao seu lado.
Durante a viagem ao hospital, a menina foi dada uma cautela de mal comportamento e foi liberada algumas horas depois.
A polícia manteve os rebeldes do bloqueio circulados durante 5 horas e meia.
A maioria dos rebeldes foram mantidos por muito mais tempo. Houve 130 detidos no total, e a polícia parecia completamente perdida de como lidar com tantos. Eles decidiram processar todos, incluindo os menores de idade e os que foram machucados, em uma área de processamento improvisada no lado da estrada.
Os 25 rebeldes que haviam tido os seus bilhetes de identidade registrados pela polícia depois de manifestações prévias foram presos e levados à estação de polícia local. Eles foram eventualmente liberados mais tarde, durante aquela noite, mas vão provavelmente encarar multas substanciais.
Os rebeldes que não tinham os seus bilhetes de identidade registrados e conectados com atividade rebelde foram dados alertas e cautelas e eventualmente soltos depois de 5 horas e meia de espera na calçada. Eles cantaram durante a noite toda para manterem seus espíritos em alta.

A XR República Checa é liderada por um grupo carinhoso de cerca de 400 ativistas dedicados. Generalizando, a opinião do público não está com eles — em parte por causa de uma mídia corporativa hostil que reporta sobre as ações com informações incorretas e ignora a crise climática inteiramente.
Durante o seu ‘Sábado de Festival’ e outros eventos ao longo da semana, rebeldes da República Checa tentaram recrutar uma nova leva de rebeldes; mas também sabem que para mudar a mentalidade desta nação, eles têm muito trabalho pela frente.
A Rebelião da Eslováquia: Fazendo História Silenciosamente
OUT 7-12 | Bratislava, Eslováquia, e Praga, República Checa
O primeiro semi-bloqueio de estrada (Swarm) na história da Eslovaquia.
É a manhã de segunda, dia 7 de Outubro, o primeiro dia da rebelião para tantos a volta do mundo. 20 rebeldes eslovacos andam em fila única através de um cruzamento em uma rua do lado de fora do Ministério da Economia em Bratislava.
Mas ao invés de cruzar a estrada, os rebeldes a bloqueiam. Dois banners da XR, pintados à mão, são desdobrados para encarar o trânsito.
Pessoas nos seus carros ficam com caras confusas e semi-entretidas, incertas do que está acontecendo. Um motorista de ônibus começa a ficar irritado, chegando a sua viatura larga mais perto dos rebeldes, gesticulando e gritando por detrás do vidro. Gratamente, o tempo de espera de 7 minutos, que é o normal em um bloqueio de estrada temporário, acaba antes que as coisas se tornem violentas e os rebeldes se espalham como ondas.
O trânsito retorna ao seu fluxo normal e nenhuma polícia chegou. É como se nada tivesse acontecido. Mas os rebeldes sorridentes sabem que isto não é verdade. Isto foi a primeira ação direta deles, de sempre. E isto foi o primeiro bloqueio “swarm” da Eslováquia. Isto foi 7 minutos de história.
Mais tarde no mesmo dia, os rebeldes notificaram a mídia nacional na Slovakia do seu desempenho. Depois disto eles deram uma aula sobre como tornar lixo de cozinha e banheiro em compostagem para o jardim. No entanto, o interesse da imprensa é pouco: na próxima manhã, só um jornal de notícia contou a história.
A XR Eslovaquia só tem alguns meses de idade e os seus membros ainda são poucos. Mesmo assim, ações foram frequentes durante a Semana da Rebelião. Na quarta-feira dia 9 de Outubro, um grupo de setenta ciclistas andaram pela Bratislava, passando vários Ministérios e fechando o trânsito temporariamente. De novo, a polícia não agiu e ninguém foi preso.

No próximo dia, quinta dia 10 de Outubro, 12 rebeldes foram a Praga para se juntarem às suas irmãs e irmãos na República Checa. Todos formam parte do bloqueio que provocou a polícia Checa a circularem cerca de 200 rebeldes, machucando duas mulheres e uma menina adolescente no processo.
O status dos Eslovacos como imigrantes ajudou-os neste caso. A burocracia adicional envolvida ao processar os seus bilhetes de identidade alienígena significou que a polícia Checa já exausta nunca os iriam prender. Os visitantes no entanto passaram sua última noite da rebelião na calçada, cantando com os seus camaradas da República Checa durante as cinco horas e meia que levou para a polícia os libertar.
A XR Eslováquia fez uma marcha funerária durante a greve global que foi chamada pelo grupo ‘Fridays for Future’.

Shocks to Political Culture in France
OCT 5-13 | Paris, France
The October Rebellion enabled XR to introduce itself to the French media and political world, and to a large part of the population. This spectacular introduction intended to draw more rebels in and allow for even more disruptive and dramatic actions.
There is little doubt that this week of massive non-violent civil disobedience created a shock wave in the political and militant sphere of the country of ‘La Grande Révolution.’ XR’s political aims and methods have struck many other protest movements in France as culturally strange, especially those on the radical left.

XR’s departure from more ‘traditional’ methods of protest, as well as its political message, drew criticism from social and anti-authoritarian movements, public commentators and intellectuals alike. This feedback certainly deserves to be heard and thought through, even if it reveals a certain reactionary attitude within the French Left.
These criticisms could prove to help XR France mature, and provide a fruitful disruption and inspiration for other social movements in the country.
In effect, the Autumn Rebellion has offered an opportunity for both XR France and movements such as the Yellow Vests to grow more impactful, both in strategy and in their political aims and messaging.
Having begun to form alliances in the first days of the rebellion, now is the time to reflect on how to collaborate more successfully with one another moving forward.

In the face of the task ahead of us, we might together concede that we will need a full spectrum of tactics to reach our shared goal: that is, to dismantle the toxic structures which are the source of this generation’s emergency.

The Rome Rebellion: Bikes, Lies, and Videotape
OCT 7-13 | Rome, Italy
Critical Mass passes through Piazza Venezia
Asked for her favourite action of the week, a rebel from the Rome media team smiles and answers quickly: ‘The Critical Mass. A hundred and fifty of us riding bikes through the centre of the city, blocking traffic for three hours’.
Italian police knew the starting point of the action and followed the swarm of bicycles in two big trucks as the riders cut through red lights and brought the city streets to a standstill. But there were no arrests. In fact, there have never been any arrests of rebels in Italy.
‘The police just video-record our faces,’ says the rebel from Rome. ‘Throughout the week, over the course of seven major actions, the police have just watched and waited and filmed everyone.’

A public endorsement from Michael Stipe, lead singer of REM, visiting Rome for an art convention, gained press coverage but it was the rebel hunger strikers who sat in a square outside the Italian Parliament which drew the most media attention.
Of the fifteen who started, ten hunger strikers made it through the whole week. Three were forced to end their strike because of health fears. But thanks to a couple of supportive MEPs, the hunger strikers were visited by Italy’s Environment Minister, Sergio Costa.
The senior politician and military official listened to the hunger strikers, but only for a minute or so. He had a more important agenda for this meeting: turning to the assembled press and lauding his ‘emergency bill about the climate’, a bill that had passed into Italian law only the day before.

Like so many similar bills which have been lauded by governments around the world, the substance did not match the title. While the bill introduces measures to tackle plastic use and offers financial incentives for drivers of older model cars to upgrade it remains silent on the issues of carbon emissions, fossil fuel usage and air travel. The phrase ‘fiddling while Rome burns’ has rarely been more apt.

It is actually an achievement that the hunger strikers got any press coverage at all. Mostly, the Italian media has ignored the climate and ecological crisis, and totally ignored Extinction Rebellion’s efforts to highlight it.
The vast majority of people in Italy don’t know that there is a climate problem, let alone its true scale. During the actions in the capital, the most supportive passers-by were tourists.
XR Italy is comprised of only a couple of hundred dedicated rebel hearts, but the week of actions has done wonders, both in terms of the skills and systems that have been passed on through workshops, and the bonds that have been created through direct actions. Trust and camaraderie has grown strong between these rebellious Romans, and new chapters are now springing up daily around the country.
One thing is for sure. The Italian police will be needing to record more videos.
Brussels Revisited
OCT 12-13 | Brussels, Belgium
Many of us were shocked by the events in Belgium on Saturday 12th, when over 400 peaceful rebels were savagely beaten, soaked, pepper-sprayed, and arrested on their first day of protest.
Authorities in Brussels have since opened up an inquiry exploring the unlawful conduct of the police. A total of four separate disciplinary investigations have been launched to address the potential use of excessive force and unacceptable violence.
Meanwhile, we spoke to a rebel on the ground about his experience of the night: ‘It’s hard to describe what it’s like to be hit in the face by pepper-spray. The best comparison I can think of, is hell. Everything burns and you feel completely disoriented. Out of this world. You can’t see, or smell, or even breathe.’
‘It’s like someone has poured a cocktail of tabasco and bleach down your throat. And there’s nothing you can do. Water makes it worse. You just have to wait it out.’
Rest assured, Extinction Rebellion will be paying very close attention to the results of the police enquiry. On Tuesday 15th, XR spokesperson Linde Polfliet appeared on national television channel VRT to discuss our peaceful values and denounce the criminal actions of the police.
XR Belgium have also released a heartfelt statement addressing ‘the negligent and stupid brutality of the illegal police action that ruined a truly beautiful and inspiring afternoon of citizen cooperation’.
The statement generously apologises to all XR members and members of the public who were caught up in ‘the nightmare that we all experienced.’ It celebrates the indomitable spirit of those who made the stand and ends with a reminder that: ‘the system, of which we are part of, is afraid. It does not know what to do (...) It needs our help to go forward. It needs us.’

Deeds not Words
An international overview of police response to the Autumn Rebellion
Our October Rebellion received many different responses: energy and excitement from new rebels across the world, love and community with returning rebels, curiosity from passersby, some grumbles from grumpy Londoners in a rush, but also a new level of intimidation and aggression from the police.
In London, police swooped in before the rebellion even began, raiding a storage space, confiscating equipment, including dangerous pink pillows and making arrests. Over the following days, police continued to confiscate all manner of items from rebels, including food and tents.
In true rebellious spirit, pink pillows popped up from all over London and the Rebellion was on again. Rebels continued to defy police aggression, even when it hit an all time low with police targeting more vulnerable rebels by confiscating wheelchairs and equipment supporting disabled rebels to protest.
But as the rebel spirit couldn’t be knocked down, the police responded with increasingly draconian measures curtailing the right to protest; initially by restricting protest to Trafalgar Square and then banning all XR protests from London.
Greta tweeted: ‘If standing up against the climate and ecological breakdown and for humanity is against the rules then the rules must be broken’.
The disproportionate London-wide ban on XR protests backfired. It galvanised support from those who recognised how dangerous a development this was, including Amnesty International who called the ban chilling and unlawful’. Green Party Co-Leader Jonathan Bartley and journalist George Monbiot were amongst those arrested the following day for defying it. The legality of the ban is now being challenged in the High Court.
Unfortunately the UK hasn’t been the only place where, instead of acting on the climate and ecological emergency, politicians have instead turned to trying to stop peaceful protest.
In Australia, the Queensland parliament criminalised locking devices and extended police powers, shortly after Australian police faced criticism for their use of strip searches and imposition of extreme bail conditions.
Use of pain compliance techniques against peaceful earth protectors was reported in Germany and Spain, while non-violent protest in Brussels was met with police violence far beyond anything experienced before.
These extreme responses to peaceful protestors show that those in power are running scared and panicking. Attempts to ignore and ridicule XR have failed and they recognise the force for change we now represent.
The way forward doesn’t require further draconian steps on a path to a police state with no civil liberties; all that is needed, is taking action on the climate and ecological emergency.

‘I don’t think enough is being done. This is like a huge joke or something, a nightmare, but it’s not. It’s the reality. I just wanted to try anything I can to change this horrible reality. I think I’d regret not doing anything.
I think here (the City of London) is the right place to do it. I study Economics and I feel so strongly that something has to change. The banks should be diverting resources to renewable projects which will create jobs. They’re just not doing that, they’re stuck in their short-termism and their quarterly reports and shareholder values and things.
It’s always been really hard for me because I’m an overseas student and I used to fly a lot. I think that if I believe that it is such a catastrophe then why am I still flying? So I’ve stopped flying and I’m looking at alternatives such as trains back to Hong Kong.
I’m consuming so much less now and I’ve realised that makes me a happier person. I grew up in a concrete jungle and I’ve always been taught that shopping is fun, but I never really took a moment to consider where my happiness comes from. I think that would be true for a lot of people, it’s just the culture that we grew up in.’
